British fans will remember the Belgian for his excellent run at Wimbledon in 2002, defeating home favourite Greg Rusedski in the last sixteen. It was not just that Malisse had made it through to the semi-finals of a Grand Slam, but that he did so in such exhilarating style, with a tournament full of adrenaline filled five-setters. Malisse came from two sets to one down against Rusedski and his quarter-final against former champion Richard Krajicek could hardly have been any tighter, with the Belgian eventually prevailing 9-7 in the final set. His semi-final, against David Nalbandian, another five-setter was the end of his fantastic Wimbledon run as it was the Argentine who progressed.
Although Malisse did not reach a Grand Slam singles final, his efforts and talent did not go unrewarded during his career. He won three singles titles on the main Tour (two in Delray Beach and one in Chennai) and nine doubles titles, scoring a Grand Slam doubles title at the 2004 French Open with fellow Belgian Olivier Rochus.
