Pernfors had an enormously successful American collegiate career, becoming the first player since Dennis Ralston to win back-to-back NCAA singles titles in 1984 and 1985. He turned professional in 1986 and during his first year reached his first and only Grand Slam singles final at the French Open. On his way to the final, the Swedish star defeated seeded players, Edberg, Becker and Leconte before losing to top-seeded Lendl. This magnificent run enabled Pernfors to jump to World No.15 and for his efforts was named the ATP’s ‘Most Improved Player’.


Pernfors career was hindered by injuries in the early 1990s, however he managed to make a remarkable comeback in 1993, winning the Tennis Masters series event in Canada – an achievement that earnt him the prestigious ATP’s ‘Comeback Player of the Year award’.


Since retiring, Pernfors has been a regular competitor on the ATP Champions Tour as well as playing in ITF Seniors events in Florida. Alongside his playing commitments, he has established a company which sells baseball caps with fellow Swede and ATP Champions Tour Player Mats Wilander.
